Children's Health & Fitness ? AMA Gets Involved In Childhood Obesity

July 16th, 2012 by Len Saunders

From The Record Journal?..

Childhood obesity has been a major concern for school officials and doctors nationwide for several years. Locally, schools have started their own programs to help alleviate the problem, offering healthy snacks and running clubs and recess programs.

Now, the American Medical Association wants to get involved in the public schools. The nation?s largest professional society of doctors recently decided to push to get curriculum aimed at preventing obesity into all schools. The association agreed to support legislation that would require classes that taught the causes, consequences and prevention of obesity for first through 12th-graders. The association encourages doctors to volunteer their time with such classes.

?I think everyone should be educated on the issue,? said Thomas Lane, medical director for the Center for Weight Management at the Hospital of Central Connecticut.

Lane said young people can?t just be given class work ? there has to be more to it. It takes the work of the society, meaning installing bike trails and walking paths. Lane even suggested having calorie counts displayed at restaurants, something that?s required in New York.

Working at the Center for Weight Management, Lane sees patients 18 and older. Many of his patients are young adults dealing with diabetes. Although Lane doesn?t see adolescents, he does know the hospital?s diabetes center sees teens suffering from type 2 diabetes due to obesity.
