While the economy has slowed since the financial down turn and triggered constructing to return to an entire halt and even put many construction companies out of business Lafayette has seen important increases in residential building. This has been largely due to excessive tech jobs which have pulled talent from all over the world of that many employees have gone to the outer edge of Pleasant hills. This inflow of excessive paying opportunities has elevated custom constructing and apartment building as well. In some circumstances many business owners are even offering careers with a place to stay and a 10,000 moving expense blank expense account for moving cost. I had a chance to look at a few of the properties that were being restored and whereas I was there they were laying new wood floors. The corporate Fine Floorz from the city of Walnut Creek was placing the brand new floors in the living room and bamboo flooring within the lavatory and cooking area areas. The person installing stated that they'd been very busy the last few months and went on to elucidate the various kinds of terrazzo they were installing. It is important to find flooring materials that is similar to the age and style of your home or condo. Tiles are a sort of onerous flooring and are available in a wide range of natural and man-made materials. Ceramic tiles, glass tiles, slate and marble are simply a few of the selections accessible and each include their very own professionals and cons. The primary advantage of tiles is that they're extremely hard and if well maintained will last a really lengthy time. As they are waterproof they are effectively suited to areas akin to bathrooms and utility rooms straightforward to wash and are additionally perfect for kitchens. However, tiles can be chilly underfoot and could be slippery when moist so are usually not suited for older folks or kids. If they've an complex pattern they can be tough to fit as well as being expensive and semi-permanent. They're also noisy and require different softer surfaces to scale back the amount of sound in a area. With the huge range of natural tones obtainable they may also help and make a warm and happy feeling and although they are often noisy, if sprung it may well help to scale back clamor and add bounce to the floorboards. The downside of wood floors is that they're normally manufactured from softer wood and subsequently can dimple easily especially by the heels of boots and shoes. Wood floors are subsequently finest suited for rooms that don't obtain heavy usage comparable to dining areas. The dark wood floors the hardwood contractor was laying was very attractive so We decided to really give the specialist a call or email to have them make available the flooring craftmanship for my wife seeing as they seemed so stunning. Streetside showers in boiling Baghdad summer

Hunched over, Yaqub mutters softly, "It's Ramadan, and I am fasting," as if to justify his actions, before he steps underneath an outdoor shower in central Baghdad to cool off in the boiling heat.

"It's hard," the delivery man admits, referring to the temperatures across Iraq which have topped 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) in recent days, spurring authorities to declare Thursday a holiday for all government workers.

"This feels good," Yaqub, 53, says after a refreshing splash of water.

Amid the brutal summer, enterprising Iraqis have set up make-shift outdoor showers, hooking up mains water supplies in shops and markets to hoses, and attaching showerheads so that passersby can find some respite from the sun.

In the Sinak neighbourhood of central Baghdad, these "dushes" have been erected on the pavement every 200 metres (yards).

"We installed a 'dush' just in front of our store, with my friend," said Ammar Yunus, who runs a vehicle maintenance shop that sells oils, lubricants and other items. "We thought it would allow people passing by to cool off a bit."

Iraqis are used to summers where the mercury tops 50 degrees Celsius at various points from June to September, with Thursday's temperature in Baghdad reaching 52 degrees Celsius.

That heat is enough to discourage clients from shopping, Yunus said.

As in recent years, the peak summer has come during the holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims are to fast from dawn until dusk.

To make matters worse, the country's already meagre national grid electricity supply falls even further as Iraqis power up their air conditioners to full capacity, forcing them to rely even more on communal and private generators to make up the gap.

And so, Wednesday evening, the government announced that Thursday would be a day off for the country's bureaucracy.

The security forces are unaffected, in a country where, though attacks are markedly fewer than in the worst of the sectarian war from 2006 to 2008, violence is still high by international standards.

On Monday, a wave of attacks killed 113 people across the country, the deadliest day in Iraq since December 2009.

At a military checkpoint in Jumhuriyah street, also in the centre of the capital, an army sergeant who only gave his name as Abbas said he was less worried by the threat of violence than by the heat and noise that accompanies a Baghdad summer.

"It's hot, of course," he said, with the top of his uniform unbuttoned.

"But we must be patient. It is Ramadan, so we must wait until the evening to eat. We are well-trained, we know we are serving our country."

Nearby, as if to taunt him, a group of children let the water from a streetside "dush" flow over them.

URBANA A lot of time, effort, and money are spent by agencies, municipalities, and other non-governmental organizations to inform and educate the public about environmental concerns. Could these groups collaborate to inform the public about an environmental concern even though their beliefs may be very different? Two studies suggest that they can and should.

University of Illinois professional geographer Bethany Cutts tracked messages to the public about water quality and usage from a variety of sources in Phoenix, Arizona. She found that considerable overlap in the messaging already existed, but there was little understanding or direction to collaborate and reach specific audiences, such as Spanish speakers in the community.

"When I began interviewing agencies in a fact-finding mission, I kept hearing the same things. They referenced each other, shared ideas, collaborated, and co-funded projects," Cutts said.

As the project progressed, Cutts determined that although the organizations' biggest strength seemed to be their connectivity and ability to share information, they haven't found a good way to manage and maximize the connections that already exist between specific groups within the public and the network of water educators.

"Everyone is trying to reach the entire public," Cutts said. "The really strong environmental groups are reaching people who already have a lot of interest in environmental and ecological issues so they're not the target audience."

Cutts suggests that even though their goals may be different, there could be more information and even financial sharing between organizations. They can work together to build public knowledge and empowerment in environmental decision making. "Some of these organizations have dissolved due to budget cuts," she said. "I wanted to see if their cumulative effort stacked information higher in some neighborhoods while missing other neighborhoods completely or if information was more randomly or evenly distributed so that everyone got some sort of information."

Cutts found that generally the public she interviewed had more information if they had heard it from several sources. "I was interested in the total number of messages a person would pass in their daily life," she said. "Someone might see a billboard and later get information in their water bill, and their child might be in an after-school program where there are puppet shows about water conservation. So some neighborhoods might be barraged with a lot of messages, whereas other neighborhoods even within the same city, might not.

"Efficiency would improve if they could be more strategic about the ways they get information distributed," she said. "They need to recognize that they can all be moderately successful at reaching the public at large or they can collaborate to engage in experimentation and to reach audiences they may be missing, such as the Spanish-speaking community."

Cutts believes understanding existing connections and seizing strategic opportunities to form new ones could be an outcome from the findings of this research.

"As the budget-constrained groups reconfigure, they can plan to preserve what they like about the way they reach the public while building public capacity and public will to prioritize water usage."

?Imitinef Mercilet? is apparently an alternative spelling of the drug Imatinib mesylate which is used in the treatment of some forms of leukemia along with other types of cancer. Imatinib, often referred to a ?Gleevec?, has proved to be an effective treatment for some forms of cancers. However, ?blood cancer? is a generalized term for cancers that affect the blood, lymphatic system or bone marrow. The three types of blood cancer are listed as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. These three malignancies require quite different kinds of treatments. While drugs (including Imatinib), along with other treatments such as radiation can help to slow or even stop the progress of these cancers, there is currently no single drug treatment that can be said to actually cure all such cancers.

Defector general Tlass calls for Syrian unity

Syrian general Manaf Tlass Tuesday called on Syrians to unite and start building a post-President Bashar al-Assad Syria as he made his first public appearance since defecting from the regime.

Reading a prepared statement on Saudi-based pan-Arab television channel Al-Arabiya, Tlass called on Syrians to "unite... to serve a Syria after Assad... and do the impossible, to ensure the unity of Syria, and to be sure to start building a new Syria."

Tlass, who defected on July 6, said he was "reaching out to (Syrians) in these difficult times for the country, as the blood of its innocents is being shed, and whose only crime has been to call for freedom."

The defector said the "new Syria ... should not be built on revenge, exclusion or monopoly" in decision-making.

He said he was speaking as "one of the sons of the Syrian Arab Army, who has rejected this regime's criminal and corrupt ways ... and who cannot accept its crimes to our country."

The defector said he did not blame those troops who have not defected, adding that "whatever mistakes made by some members of the Syrian Arab Army ... those honourable troops who have not partaken in the killing ... are the extension of the Free Syrian Army."

It is "the duty of Syrians to unite, to build a free, democratic Syria," said Tlass.

A high-profile military figure and former member of Assad's inner circle, Tlass has been mentioned as someone who could play a leading role in a transition phase in Syria should Assad go or be removed from power.

Snacking and BMI linked to double effect of brain activity and self-control

ScienceDaily (July 23, 2012) ? Snack consumption and BMI are linked to both brain activity and self-control, new research has found.

The research, carried out by academics from the Universities of Exeter, Cardiff, Bristol, and Bangor, discovered that an individual's brain 'reward centre' response to pictures of food predicted how much they subsequently ate. This had a greater effect on the amount they ate than their conscious feelings of hunger or how much they wanted the food,

A strong brain response was also associated with increased weight (BMI), but only in individuals reporting low levels of self-control on a questionnaire. For those reporting high levels of self-control a stronger brain response to food was actually related to a lower BMI.

This study, which is now published in the journal NeuroImage, adds to mounting evidence that overeating and increased weight are linked, in part, to a region of the brain associated with motivation and reward, called the nucleus accumbens. Responses in this brain region have been shown to predict weight gain in healthy weight and obese individuals, but only now have academics discovered that this is independent of conscious feelings of hunger, and that self-control also plays a key role.

Following these results, academics at the University of Exeter and Cardiff have begun testing 'brain training' techniques designed to reduce the influence of food cues on individuals who report low levels of self-control. Similar tests are being used to assist those with gambling or alcohol addiction.

Dr Natalia Lawrence of Psychology at the University of Exeter, lead researcher in both the original research and the new studies, said: "Our research suggests why some individuals are more likely to overeat and put on weight than others when confronted with frequent images of snacks and treats. Food images, such as those used in advertising, cause direct increases in activity in brain 'reward areas' in some individuals but not in others. If those sensitive individuals also struggle with self-control, which may be partly innate, they are more likely to be overweight. We are now developing computer programs that we hope will counteract the effects of this high sensitivity to food cues by training the brain to respond less positively to these cues."

Twenty-five young, healthy females with BMIs ranging from 17-30 were involved in the study. Female participants were chosen because research shows females typically exhibit stronger responses to food-related cues. The hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle affect this reaction, so all participants were taking the monophasic combined oral contraceptive pill. Participants had not eaten for at least six hours to ensure they were hungry at the time of the scan and were given a bowl containing 150 g (four and a half packets) of potato chips to eat at the end of the study; they were informed that potato chip intake had been measured afterwards.

Researchers used MRI scanning to detect the participants' brain activity while they were shown images of household objects, and food that varied in desirability and calorific content. After scanning, participants rated the food images for desirability and rated their levels of hunger and food craving. Results showed that participants' brain responses to food (relative to objects) in the nucleus accumbens predicted how many potato chips they ate after the scan. However, participants' own ratings of hunger and how much they liked and wanted the foods, including potato chips, were unrelated to their potato chip intake.

This study was funded by the Wales Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience.

What this study shows:

  • Brain responses to food images vary considerably between individuals.
  • Brain responses to food images but not conscious feelings of hunger or desire to eat predict subsequent potato chip consumption.
  • Individuals' reported levels of self-control influence whether this brain response is associated with a higher or lower BMI.

What this study does NOT show:

  • Brain responses to food cues cause overeating.
  • The associations reported here are true in everyone -- only healthy young women were included.
  • Whether our brain response and levels of self-control are learned or innate.

Automobile Insurance Law & Understanding Gaps

Most people believe that if they get ?full coverage? they are covered for anything an automobile accident throws at them.? Unfortunately, this is not the case.? Very few insurance agents take the time to truly explain how liability insurance interacts with uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and medical payments coverage.? Often people do not understand what they are purchasing, they are mostly interested in the number behind the $.? If you understand how the auto insurance coverages work, you can be sure you are protected and know what to expect if you are ever involved in a motor vehicle collision.

Liability Insurance

The liability coverage is what is required by the State, and the current minimum coverage is $25,000.00 per person/$50,000 per accident.? But what does that mean and who does it cover?? If another driver smashes into your vehicle with you and 1 passenger in it, then both you and your passenger may receive up to $25,000 from the other driver?s automobile insurance. If there are three people in your car, then the three of you will be fighting to divide up $50,000 so long as none of you get more than $25,000.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) Coverage

So what happens when your medical expenses alone exceed the $25,000 minimum limits of the other driver?? Or worse yet, what if they did not have coverage at all?? Was the collision a hit and run?? You have ?full coverage? on your car, so why will your insurance only pay to fix your car?? If you are asking these questions, chances are, you may not like the answers.

Full coverage insurance is often nothing more than liability and collision insurance for damages to your vehicle.? You will need to pay your deductible before your insurance company will pay a dime.? Your insurance does not automatically cover your injuries if the other driver does not have insurance or does not have enough insurance.? You must have UM/UIM coverage with limits higher than the other driver?s limits if you want your insurance company to pay.? This is an optional coverage many people decline to purchase.? This is essentially relying on your fellow drivers to have all complied with the law, and gambling on any injury you may receive being relatively minor.

Medical Payments Coverage

You may think that since you have health insurance through your employer, a government program, or a private policy that you are covered no matter what causes your need for medical attention.? If you are involved in a motor vehicle collision you will quickly discover how much this assumption will cost you.

Most medical facilities refuse to bill your health insurance for injuries due to a motor vehicle collision (and certain other circumstances).? After the initial emergency room treatment, many individuals have difficulty obtaining medical treatment because the medical providers refuse to see someone under their health insurance for motor vehicle collision injuries.? The other driver?s insurance is not going to pay anything until your medical treatment is concluded so they can write one check.? This is where having medical payments coverage comes into play.

If you have medical payments coverage, it will cover your medicals until it has been exhausted.? Your ambulance bill, ER bill, radiology bills, emergency physician bills, family physician, specialist, therapy, etc. can all bill your insurance company under this medical payments coverage and be paid 100%.? Sadly, most people have $1,000 or $5,000 in medical payments coverage.? This is exhausted just from the emergency treatment, so then they are back in the same boat.

Getting counsel early in the process will help make sure you can make the most of your medical payments coverage.? Not only can that, but having a lawyer can help you force your insurance company to pay the bills.? There are deadlines for submitting medicals to health insurance companies and your auto insurance may have subrogation on the final settlement that will need to be addressed before you can settle the claim.

Interaction of Coverages

Most serious collision injuries will involve some or all of the above insurance coverages.? When there is insurance coverage available, the medical payments coverage will kick in first. If you have this on your auto policy, they will help you pay for medical treatment right away.? Once that coverage is exhausted, your health insurance should kick in and pay for the remainder of treatment (minus your deductible and copay).

Once the treatment is completed, the other driver?s insurance should pay for the injuries up to the limits of their policy.? When they do, your health insurance and your medical payments coverage will want to be paid back.? After the other driver has tendered the full amount of their policy limits, the UM/UIM coverage will kick in to pay the remainder of your damages.

Insurance companies are in business to make money.? The do this by delaying payment or denying payment on legitimate claims, offering less than a case is worth, and getting people to settle before their medical treatment is finished for less than the case is worth.? Too many people are trying to save money by trimming their insurance to the State minimums or canceling their insurance altogether.? This leaves them unprotected if they are injured, and leaves anyone they injure without adequate compensation for their injuries.? Knowing how these policies interact will help injured persons understand what options they have when purchasing coverage for their families and when they are the injured party. ?Skilled and knowledgeable counsel can assist you in getting the most out of your claim and your insurance.

India's import taxes raise to hit Indonesia, M'sian oil refiners

India's move to raise taxes on its imports of refined palm oil products is likely to put a dent in the earnings of Malaysian and Indonesian refiners of the commodity, analysts said.

The decision, however, is neutral for crude palm oil (CPO) producers as India's CPO imports remain duty-free.

India, the world's biggest importer of palm oil, effectively doubled import taxes last Thursday when it ended a six-year freeze on the base import price of processed palm olein, increasing the cost of imports from Malaysia and Indonesia.

The country currently imports close to half its edible oil needs, and palm oil takes pole position with a 43 per cent share of the edible oil market.

The new tax policy, which lifts the base price of refined palm oil imports to market prices from US$484 (1,535 ringgit) per tonne, is aimed at placating disgruntled refiners in India, who were doubly hit by both the low tariff and cheaper processed palm oil products from Indonesia.

Since Indonesia slashed its export taxes on refined palm oil last October, India's imports have doubled to 1.2 million tonnes for the first eight months of this year over 2011.

CPO futures closed lower yesterday at 2,990 ringgit ($940).

Indonesia and Malaysia, the world's top two producers of palm oil, account for 90 per cent of global output of some 50 million tonnes.

Indonesia supplies 74 per cent of India's palm oil requirements while Malaysia makes up the balance 26 per cent.

Malaysia exported 1.66 million tonnes of palm oil products, or 9 per cent of its total exports, to India last year. In the first half of the year, Malaysia shipped 1.07 million tonnes there, which was 82 per cent more than in the same period in 2011.

CIMB Research said in a client note that the higher tax was estimated to widen the margin advantage of palm oil refiners in India to 7.73 per cent from 3.5 per cent.

?This will allow them to compete better with the Indonesian refiners, which we estimate enjoy a profit margin of 5 per cent to 10 per cent due to the favourable export tax for refined palm products in Indonesia,? it said.

The research unit also pointed out that the levies could make CPO imports more competitive versus processed palm oil, resulting in higher imports of the former to India. ?Players that will benefit include all the upstream producers as this will boost demand for CPO over refined palm products from India.

?Refiners like Mewah and Wilmar's refineries in Malaysia and Indonesia could face stiffer competition from India's refiners and this could crimp their refining margins.?

Maybank IB Research reckons the situation could pressure Malaysian policymakers to revisit the current export tax structure as palm oil inventory is expected to pile up in the upcoming seasonally high production months.

?The change further dilutes the competitiveness of Malaysian refined palm oil while Indonesia's refiners' margins could be compressed (for sale to India).

?Malaysia imposes a high export duty on CPO of 23 per cent and consequently, the bulk of its CPO production flows downstream to its refineries. However, there is an over-capacity of refineries in Malaysia, and margins are already negative for some,? it said in a client note.

The brokerage sees two options for policymakers - they could either increase the quota for duty-free CPO exports as an interim measure on top of the approximately three million tonnes awarded earlier this year, or reduce Malaysia's high export duty tax on CPO to a maximum tax rate of 10 per cent?from 23 per cent now to mirror Indonesia's tax differential between refined and crude palm oil.

Maybank IB Research is cognisant, however, that a larger quota of duty-free CPO exports may irk refiners, while revamping Malaysia's export tax structure now could prove unpopular coming just ahead of the national polls.

?After all, 39 per cent of Malaysia's oil palm planted areas are owned by smallholders and government agencies, while the bulk of Malaysia's refining capacity are owned by the large listed entities.?

It added that as policy makers continued to deliberate, market forces are ?taking their own course?, with millers in Sabah and Sarawak sharing the burden of refiners by giving them discounts in the first half of 2012.

?And effective July, we understand Wilmar (Malaysia's largest refiner with a capacity of some five million tonnes) has discontinued all forward purchases agreements in Malaysia, opting for spot purchases.

?We believe this will give Wilmar stronger bargaining position to demand for even higher discounts especially when CPO tanks (of millers) ?overflow? in the coming months.

?Should this happen, purer Malaysian upstream players will suffer' from lower revenue as a result of heavy discounting (vis-vis CPO spot prices) to clear their CPO stocks.?

Sennheiser MM 550-X

Can't decide if you want a wired or wireless pair of headphones, or one with active noise cancellation or without? If you've got the cash, you can have it all with the Sennheiser MM 550-X ($499.95 direct), an extremely well designed set that covers practically every situation you'd ever encounter. It also sound pretty amazing. It's not the best $500 pair of headphones we've heard?wired models still win in the end?but it certainly sounds fantastic, even over Bluetooth. Sennheiser's active noise cancelling is somewhat less successful, as it's not the most effective we've heard and also affects the otherwise pristine sound quality more than it should. But even so, this headphone pair is still an easy recommendation.

Design, Accessories, and Controls
The MM 550-X is a closed, around-the-ear design, and weighs 6.3 ounces with the battery inserted. Both the earcups and the headband are heavily padded, and the soft padding feels quite comfortable. You get quite a lot of passive noise cancelling just from the tight seal the earcups form with the MM 550-X on your head. The headset is also a bit lighter than some larger pairs of wired headphones, like the venerable Sennheiser HD 650 ($499.95, 5 stars) and the Bose QuietComfort 15 ($299.95, 4 stars). Even so, it feels quite rugged; the plastic, folding hinges in the headband and around the earcups in particular look especially sturdy.?

Sennheiser packs in a number of accessories. In addition to the headphones themselves and the rechargeable battery, you get a USB charging cable, a power plug with adapters for different countries, a stereo audio cable (2.5mm to 3.5mm) for use in wired mode, a 1/4-inch headphone adapter, an in-flight adapter for use with double mono jacks on airplanes, and a rugged, zippered cloth carrying case. The manual comes as a PDF file burned onto an included CD-ROM.

The controls are extremely easy to use even with the headphones on your ear. The center of the oversize five-way control-pad on the right earcup is large enough for an entire fingertip, and features a raised plastic circle around it, so that you can't miss it. Top and bottom control the volume, while left and right skip to the next track in either direction, all on devices that support remote control over Bluetooth. You can also hold down the Skip buttons to fast-forward or rewind the track. The bottom of the right earcup houses Bluetooth, NoiseGuard, and SRS buttons (more on these in a moment), as well as a 2.5mm jack for using the headphones in a wired configuration. The left earcup only has a covered micro USB charger port.

Hold down the multifunction button for five seconds, and the MM 550-X goes into pairing mode. You'll never miss that; not only does the control pad pulse red and blue, but the SRS and Bluetooth buttons light up as well. I had no problem pairing the MM 550-X with an Apple iPhone 4. The Multifunction button also handles accepting, rejecting, and ending calls, and you can transfer the ongoing call between the phone and the headphones?or activate voice dialing by pressing and holding the Bluetooth button.

Sound Quality and Noise Cancellation
Sennheiser's big pitch with the MM 550-X is apt-X audio encoding, which the company claims delivers wireless audio quality that is indistinguishable from the highest quality wired connection. Here's the trick, though: It only works if the sound source also supports apt-X. My iPhone 4 doesn't, but even so, I heard pristine audio in both wired and wireless modes. Both modes sounded virtually identical. I heard the tiniest bit of compression artifacts in wireless mode, in a slightly more closed soundstage and a touch of occasional harshness, but I had to strain to hear it.

Aside from that, sound quality was excellent overall. In The Knife's "Silent Shout," our standard bass test track, I heard a touch of distortion at top volumes, but none at normal listening levels?or even beyond. The overall sonic signature was warm, with a full-bodied low-end, exceptional low-end extension, a smooth midrange, and airy highs that didn't stick out but were still full of detail. On Queen of the Stone Age's "The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret," it was easy to hear the multiple guitars and other instruments across the soundstage, while the rhythm section still had plenty of punch.

Pressing and holding the NoiseGuard button for two seconds activates the MM 550-X's active noise compensation system. It does this via a pair of tiny mics near the earcups that focus on ambient noise in the 20Hz to 1KHz range, and then use this noise as a template for generating an opposite wave, 180 degrees out of phase, to cancel the noise out. Press and hold a second time, and you'll turn NoiseGuard off.

With NoiseGuard on, the MM 550-X did a nice job of muting some strong office fans of various sizes. But you could still hear them more than you could with, say, the Bose QuietComfort 15. My main issue with NoiseGuard, though, was the reduction in fidelity; it turned the MM 550-X into an average pair of headphones you could buy for about $50, in terms of sound quality. The warmth disappeared, I heard the typical artifacts in the midrange that often betray active noise compensation, and nearly all of the MM 550-X's marvelous bass extension vaporized. Bose QuietComfort models are by no means musically neutral, but they seem to do a better job of compensating for the active noise cancellation circuitry.

TalkThrough, Other Features, and Conclusions
The TalkThrough function takes the audio recorded from the tiny mics and actually pumps it in the earcups. This way, you can hear what's going on around you without removing the headset, while still filtering out more distant background noise. You activate this by just briefly pressing the NoiseGuard button, instead of holding it down. When you do this, it pauses the music so you can talk to someone in the room; turn off TalkThrough, and the music will begin playing again.

Meanwhile, the SRS button is, well, as the SRS button. With SRS WOW HD engaged, the highs are exaggerated in the 5KHz region, as if you're listening to a cassette on a car stereo, with little top-end air or detail around them. The button also amplifies the bass even further, but with extra mud, as if the "bass" control on a cheap mini system is turned up without much in the way of granularity. My recommendation: Leave it off.

In my tests, MM 550-X wasn't that great at handling voice calls. I heard the other caller, but their voice sounded computerized, and I could barely hear my own words because of the tight seal of the earcups. I was hoping TalkThrough would be a good workaround for this problem, but if you activate it during a voice call, it does the same thing as it does with the music?it mutes the audio source and turns on the external mics, so you can't hear the caller anymore.

According to Sennheiser, the battery should provide 8 hours of continuous listening with Bluetooth and NoiseGuard (active noise cancellation) enabled, 10 hours over Bluetooth without NoiseGuard, and 20 hours in wired mode with NoiseGuard activated. It will last forever in wired mode without noise cancellation, because then it works just like a regular pair of headphones. The LED indicator flashes red when the battery is almost dead.

One other minor quirk: You need to take care when disconnecting the micro USB charging cable. Otherwise, you'll pull the battery clear out of the left ear cup, which isn't good if you don't notice it, and then leave the house without the battery inside. But there's a reason for this design: You can charge the battery pack either when it's inside the earcup or out, since the battery itself contains the micro USB charger port.

Overall, the Sennheiser MM 550-X is an extremely flexible set of headphones. You're paying for all of this technology, of course, and not all of the money is going into the actual sound quality. The MM 550-X sound good enough that you'll feel like it's money well spent, especially when using it wirelessly. Its active noise cancellation, while not class leading, is still fairly effective; if you want the best and don't need a wireless pair, the AKG K 490 NC ($249.95, 4.5 stars) or the older Bose QuietComfort 15 will still perform better there. If you don't specifically need Bluetooth compatibility or active noise cancellation, the Sennheiser RS 220 ($599.95, 4.5 stars) remains our Editors' Choice for high-end wireless headphones, with its stellar sound and comfort, although it is really designed for home use. The Sennheiser MM 100 ($149.95, 3.5 stars) is a more affordable and practical wireless option that still delivers solid performance. And if you don't mind an in-ear design, the wireless Sony XBA-BT75 ($299.99, 3.5 stars) sounds good and is very easy to tote, although it's still a little big when compared with standard stereo earphones.

Read This Article Before You Buy A Second Hand Bicycle

When you need to purchase a second hand bicycle, or even just a cheap bike, try to buy it from a reputable outlet. If you need to buy it privately, make sure you get a guarantee of some sort,, so that you have the option to take the bicycle back should it be faulty. If you buy a second hand bicycle over the internet, make sure you inspect the photographs carefully before you purchase it. Sites like Amazon will however offer you some sort of protection if you buy through them. When a new bicycle leaves the floor, just like a motor car, it loses about 50% of it's value, so it is always a good option to look at buying a good second hand bicycle.

When looking for a cheap bike, ask somebody who knows something about bicycles to help you make your decision, so that you will at least have the benefit of a second opinion from a knowledgeable person.

First you need to check the frame of the bicycle you intend buying. The frame should be structurally sound, as it is expensive to replace if it isn't. Make sure it isn't bent or been thrashed about too much. Superficial marks are fine, but don't buy it if it has any dents or rust.

Check on the state of the brakes, gears, derailleur system, bottom bracket (which the pedals rotate around), headset, wheel spokes and hubs. The wheels shouldn't be buckled and the spokes should be rigid. The spokes should make a nice ping sound if you pluck them like you would a harp.

Check the size of the bicycle. The person who is going to be riding the bicycle should if possible physically take a ride on the bike to make sure it is the right size and fit. There is nothing worse than buying a bicycle, only to discover you don't enjoy riding it, as it isn't a comfortable fit.

Make sure to ask the seller how old the bike is, where it has been stored and whether or not they bought it new or second hand. Find out how many km's they have done on it, and how often they ride in wet weather.

Last but not least, take steps to ensure that the bike is not stolen. You can check on sites like BikeRevolution.org and BikeRegister.com. On these sites you will find listings of stolen bicycles by inserting the frame number or registration number.

If you are careful in your choice of second hand bicycle, there are many benefits to buying one. For one, all the teething problems associated with new bicycles should be smoothed out. The next best thing is you will normally get the bicycle for a good price. You will thus be able to afford to buy a better bike with good components, which will add to your cycling experience and pleasure. Normally with second hand bicycles, loads of extras will have been added over time, so you will get even more value for your money.

Patent Watch: Ultrasound Guide Probe Device

Ultrasound-guided probe device: When doctors inject a patient with a needle, they cannot see what they are getting themselves into. Underneath the skin, where they hope there is a vein waiting to be tapped, is a dark, mysterious world. This struck Stephen Ridley, now president and chief medical officer of Soma Access Systems in Greenville, S.C., as a problem. ?You literally do this blind,? he says.

Ultrasound can help image tissues that are inside, but it is bad at imaging the needle itself. The needle's round, metallic surface simply scatters the ultrasonic waves and basically appears invisible. So Ridley, whose background is in engineering and medicine, designed a potential solution: combining ultrasound and magnets. The ultrasound shows the tissue, and a small magnet at the tip of the needle is picked up by an array of magnets in the ultrasound probe. The magnetic field generated does not interfere with the ultrasound and allows doctors to see both the tissue they are piercing and the needle they are piercing it with. The system helps them line up their needle beforehand, removing much of the guesswork they have dealt with before.

Ridley started this idea with a particular procedure in mind: central venous access, in which doctors place a large catheter into a deep vein, often to administer blood or lifesaving fluids after trauma. Yet since showing the device, patent No. 8,152,724, to specialists, he has realized that the applications could go beyond that one procedure. Physicians can use the needle-imaging technology for everything from amniocentesis to making sure medication is injected properly into joints.

Strategic Planning For Established Businesses in Vancouver ...

company analysis and advertising and marketplaceing to ensure company growth should be of utmost priority. This is essential and cannot be overlooked, or else failure is eminent.

It is imperative that an organization take deliberate action to ensure that in the coming months and years, advancements are made to cultivate its efforts to an attained purpose.

This can be done by understanding four standard fundamentals that will solidify a business enterprise? direction and overall motivation. These steps turn into the life line or blueprint that will carry a business enterprise from one level to the next.

originally, it may seem to be a difficult task, due to the extensive time that is spent on self evaluation. Many occasions businesses do not see the value of such an effort and that is why they will not undertake such a challenge. The reality is that strategic planning for growing companyes is an essential key to success.

A company must first see what their vision is. This is a deep analysis of what would make the organization an overall success. The vision is the desired end result or big picture of what and when the organization considers it has arrived to its best achievement.

becoming specific in this area of an overall vision is very vital as this will help set the goals to achieve the big picture. The overall vision will then turn out to be the traveling force of determination that retains the business moving ahead despite difficulties and/or down falls.

Second, is the essential understanding that growth is done a little at a time. Strategic planning for growing enterprisees includes the step-by-step formulation that will propel the business to the next level of achievement.

Goals are essentially the stepping blocks towards the overall vision. Goals can have the flexibility to be adjustd where as the over all vision stays the constant traveling force that is desired.

The third fundamental is an enterprise must be flexible. When an enterprise has flexibility it now has the power to alter its goals due to the transform in market trends, the competitions new direction or decisions for better implementation of overall strategies.

The on target analysis is the fourth fundamental, which in a sense seems to make a full circle right to the original start of looking at the overall picture once again, and ensuring that the goals, investments and accomplishments are lining up with the over all vision.

Overall analysis really should be done regularly to ensure the enterprise is optimized and on target toward its intended overall objective. It is much easier to get back on track early on, somewhat than waiting till more serious matters are introduced to attention.

It is essential for a companyes to apply these fundamentals but it can nonetheless be a daunting task. Like any ?living? thing, it requires constant care and attention. This is where hiring an organization consultant or developing a research team may prove to be an extremely profitable funding.

Strategic planning for growing organizationes that apply these simple fundamentals will find they are a vibrant routine of continued success.

Jamaican Marijuana Torched After Police Seizure

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Nearly 15,000 pounds (6,795 kilograms) of marijuana have gone up in smoke in Jamaica.

The bonfire of seized drugs follows raids on marijuana-growing and trafficking operations on the Caribbean island launched since 2010.

Police say the majority of the marijuana was seized this year.

Authorities say they also destroyed about 75 pounds (34 kilograms) of hash oil during Saturday's burning operation at an undisclosed police site in the Kingston area.

Jamaica is the Caribbean region's largest producer and exporter of marijuana. Plants are grown mostly on mountain hillsides or hidden among other crops.
