Downtown Miami Residential Nearly Full - Miami International ...

Posted on by The Victoria Law Group

Remember the dire predictions of just a few years ago?? When we all presumed that the empty condos would melt under the heat of the Miami Sun for lack of use??? Well, recent reports suggest that Miami?s infamous condo canyon is almost full, thanks largely to a steady flow of cash from Latin America.? Unfortunately, we can?t say the same thing for the Commercial Sector.? Many people want to live here, but not many can work here.

A Denver-based communications firm is giving away $75,000 worth of creative services to one nonprofit organization.

Pure Brand Communications is accepting applications from nonprofit organizations across the country who need branding, marketing and other creative services. For one year, the company will treat the nonprofit agency like any other client.

The company, which is about eight years old, had been doing pro bono work for nonprofit organizations, but it was small bits of work. Instead, the company?s partners wanted to work on a single project that would have more impact, said Larry Holdren, Pure Brand partner.

?We really wanted a project where nearly everyone in our company of 25 people could be involved in some way, so that there is a real sense of ownership,? he said.

Last year, the company created ?Pure Good Works? and awarded one nonprofit agency one year of their creative services.

?We have a long history of supporting kid-related causes,? Holdren said. ?It?s a big part of who we are as an organization.?

The deadline is April 13. Holdren expects to receive dozens of applications and the recipient is expected to be announced in May.

?Times are tough right now for nonprofits,? Holdren said. ?We will have to say no to a a lot of really fantastic organizations. There are so many organizations that need help.?

Last year, Pure Brand gave its grant to ?Rachel?s Challenge,? a K-12 school assembly and eduction program inspired by Rachel Scott, the first student killed in the 1999 Columbine High School shootings. Rachel?s Challenge is a program that inspires a chain reaction of good deeds and kindness. Pure Brand created a brand strategy and messaging platform, a tactical plan, a promotional video and a social media strategy for the organization.

Holdren said all nonprofits, not just those with a kid-focus, are eligible to apply for the grant.

Ancient raindrop fossils shed light on early atmosphere

Fossilized imprints of raindrops that were sealed into stone 2.7 billion years ago indicate that Earth's early atmosphere could have been packed with greenhouse gases, according to new research that addresses a long-standing paradox of the planet's early history.

About 2 billion years ago, the young sun was far less bright, emitting less than 85% of the light and heat it puts out today. With such weak sunlight, Earth should have remained frozen. But ancient water-damaged rocks and algae-like fossils show clear evidence that there was indeed liquid water in the distant past.

How did Earth manage to stay so warm? Some scientists theorize that the atmosphere must have been thicker, or perhaps more densely packed with greenhouse gases that are very good at trapping heat from sunlight.

?

To get at the answer, a team of scientists from the University of Washington in Seattle adopted an unusual method employed in 1851 by a 19th-century geologist named Charles Lyell.

Lyell suggested that the thickness of the ancient atmosphere could be pinned down by measuring the size of fossil raindrops. When a raindrop splatters on something soft, it makes a little crater ? and the faster that droplet is falling, the bigger that crater will be. In a thin atmosphere, that droplet will plummet to the ground, while a thicker atmosphere would slow it down, buffering its fall and resulting in a smaller dent.

With this in mind, the modern-day researchers examined 2.7-billion-year-old sedimentary rock from South Africa. Tiny pits in the rock made by falling raindrops were quickly preserved by a thin layer of fine ash that acted rather like a protective varnish. That was followed by a second layer of coarser ash that was later worn away, leaving the raindrop imprints intact.

"What's so incredible, in a sense, is that they were preserved for so long," said study leader Sanjoy Som, now an astrobiologist at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif.

Som and his colleagues poured latex over the rocks, creating casts of 955 raindrops that they studied back in the lab.

But before they could draw any conclusions from the fossils, the researchers needed to see how raindrops behaved in action. They sprinkled water onto ash gathered from two sites ? fresh ash from the 2010 Eyjafjallaj?kull eruption in Iceland, and much older ash from the Pleistocene era from Pahala in Hawaii ? to see how the size and speed of raindrops affected the size of the dents they made.

Using these data as a guide, the researchers calculated that to make the fossilized craters, the raindrops were probably falling through an atmosphere similar to ours, or perhaps thinner ? one that was 50% to 105% of its current thickness. They reported their results in Thursday's edition of the journal Nature.

The findings appear to rule out the possibility that young Earth was being warmed by a super-thick atmosphere. It's possible that the atmosphere back then contained a higher proportion of potent greenhouse gases like methane or carbonyl sulfide than it does today, said William Cassata, a geochronologist at UC Berkeley who was not involved in the study.

There is one caveat: The atmospheric estimates rely on the assumption that ancient and modern raindrops were about the same size, Cassata said.

"There's no reason to think raindrops in the past were any larger," he said. "However, if the raindrops were anomalously large, then they can accommodate pressures twice what we observe today."

Som sees use for this approach elsewhere in the solar system. If fossil raindrops are ever discovered on Mars, this technique could be useful for learning more about the Red Planet's past atmosphere.

And, Som said, for scientists tired of looking for life on other planets by comparing them to Earth, understanding the markedly different atmosphere of ancient times would give researchers an entirely new point of comparison.

"It was essentially a completely different world," he said.

When dinosaurs roamed a fiery landscape

Thursday, March 29, 2012

The dinosaurs of the Cretaceous may have faced an unexpected hazard: fire! In a paper published online today, researchers from Royal Holloway University of London and The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago have shown that during the Cretaceous (145-65 million years ago) fire was much more widespread than previously thought.

The researchers traced fire activity in the fossil record through the occurrence of charcoal deposits, compiling a global database for this time interval. "Charcoal is the remnant of the plants that were burnt and is easily preserved in the fossil record," explained Professor Andrew C. Scott, the project leader from Royal Holloway.

This period was a greenhouse world where global temperatures were higher than those of today. Lightning strikes would have been the main trigger for these wildfires, but this period was also one when atmospheric oxygen levels were high.

Ian Glasspool from The Field Museum and one of the report authors, points out that this "was why fires were so widespread. As at such periods ? unlike today ? plants with higher moisture contents could burn."

The prevalence of fires throughout the Cretaceous would have created a more disturbed environment. Professor Scott highlighted that, "Until now, few have taken into account the impact that fires would have had on the environment, not only destroying the vegetation but also exacerbating run-off and erosion and promoting subsequent flooding following storms." These past events may give some insights into how increased fire activity today may impact the world we live in.

The research also shows that charcoal may often be associated with dinosaur deposits. Sarah Brown, a PhD student on the project and lead author, commented, "When I first started my research in Dinosaur Provincial Park in Canada nobody had seen any charcoal but quickly I was able to see it everywhere, including associated with dinosaur bone beds, it was incredible".

The researchers are now assessing the impact that these fires would have had upon dinosaur communities. The research is published in the journal Cretaceous Research.

Senate resolution on Iran may be bipartisan, but it could lead to war

The Senate is considering a bipartisan resolution on Iran that denounces containment and could be taken as an authorization of US force against a nuclear Iran. But containment is the second-worst option. A preventive strike that could lead to war in the Middle East is the worst.

A Senate resolution on Iran is being touted by its bipartisan cosponsors as a way to ?put to rest any suspicion? that the United States would acquiesce to a nuclear-capable Iran.

The tough tone is admirable, but the resolution, which awaits action in the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, is seriously flawed. Although non-binding, this resolution expressing the sense of the Senate confuses the issue and is simply bad policy.

Cosponsored by Democrat Robert Casey of Pennsylvania, Republican Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and Independent Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, the resolution calls on the president to ?reaffirm the unacceptability of an Iran with nuclear-weapons capability.? And it has him ?oppose any policy that would rely on containment as an option in response to the Iranian nuclear threat.?

As a retired Air Force colonel with experience as a student, instructor, and practitioner in the national security arena, I have two major concerns about this document, although I also see a silver lining.

One issue is the definition of ?nuclear weapons capability.? There is a vast difference between having the capability to produce nuclear weapons and actually doing so.

It is not irrational to argue that Iran already possesses ?nuclear weapons capability? and has had it for some years. The Iranians possess the uranium and the ability to enrich it and may be nearing a plutonium reprocessing capability. They certainly have the scientific and technical expertise to produce a weapon given the time and a political decision to do so.

The resolution also calls for ?the full and sustained suspension of all uranium enrichment-related and reprocessing activities.? In other words, it would seem to have Iran give up most if not all of its nuclear programs, peaceful and otherwise.

There is a legitimate dispute as to whether Iran has the right under the nonproliferation treaty (NPT) to have full nuclear fuel cycle capability. But this dispute must be decided by negotiation, not a resolution.

Iran is an NPT signatory but has not fully complied with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspection and other procedures. A negotiated agreement wherein Iran retains a civilian nuclear program, as it is entitled to under the NPT with IAEA inspections and safeguards, would resolve this dispute and ease fears of an Iranian nuclear weapons program.

But the resolution has another problem beyond the capability issues. It asserts that containment is not an acceptable outcome. President Obama has already made this clear, so why object to the resolution?

Michigan State ends season with mixed emotions

Michigan State's surprisingly successful season ended with a thud.

The Spartans started the season unranked, then accomplished enough to be a top-seeded team in the NCAA tournament. They advanced to the round of 16 for the 10th time in 15 years, but ended with perhaps their poorest performance of the season.

Louisville sent Michigan State home with a 57-44 win Thursday night in the West Regional semifinals.

"It's hard to feel good and hard to feel bad," Spartans coach Tom Izzo said. "It's hard to feel good because I don't think we had anybody that played at all like they played in the last three weeks. But it's hard to feel bad because Louisville deserved it."

Michigan State entered the game on a roll, winning three games to earn the Big Ten tournament title and its first two games in the NCAA tournament.

The Spartans saved their worst for last. They made just 29 percent of their shots overall and got outrebounded by the Cardinals, whose zone defense slowed down a previously effective offense.

"We thought we was pretty well prepared for it," forward Draymond Green said. "It's not our coaches' fault. I think they gave us a great game plan. At the end of the day, players play, and we didn't, we just didn't execute well."

Green, though, did for much of the season.

The do-it-all forward was chosen the Big Ten player of the year, the conference tournament's most outstanding player and broke Greg Kelser's school record for career rebounds.

Green is graduating this spring, leaving the program with a big void on and off the court. The Spartans also will be without departing seniors Austin Thornton and Brandon Wood.

Michigan State returns a solid nucleus of players, including point guard Keith Appling, centers Derrick Nix and Adreian Payne along with guard Branden Dawson, whose freshman season was cut short by a left knee injury. Dawson has had surgery and hopes to be ready to join the team for preseason practices next fall.

The Spartans have a highly touted recruiting class, including two of the top in-state players, Bay City's Matt Costello, who won the Mr. Basketball award and runner-up Denzel Valentine of Lansing, along with Gary Harris, who was recognized as the top player in Indiana, and Ohio's Kenny Kaminski.

Michigan State won the Big Ten title for the third time in four years, claimed the conference tournament championship for the first time since 2000 and advanced to the NCAA's round of 16 for the 10th time in 15 years.

For the first time in four NCAA tournaments as a No. 1 seed, Izzo didn't guide the Spartans to at least four wins to reach the national semifinals. His record fell to 7-3 in the round of 16, and he wasn't happy about preparations for the first regional semifinal with just three days off.

The team flew to Arizona on Monday night, a day after beating Saint Louis, to prepare for Louisville.

"I think I made some mistakes, too, I really do," Izzo said. "I'd never come out on a Monday again. I think we needed more time (in East Lansing). It was just a weird situation for us.

Michigan State started the season in an unusual position, not ranked in The Associated Press preseason poll. The Spartans had just two players ? Green and Appling ? who averaged double digits in minutes last year.

After setbacks in showcase games against North Carolina on an aircraft carrier and to Duke in New York, the Spartans won 15 straight, including at Gonzaga, against Indiana and at Wisconsin. They then lost three of five in January and rallied with a seven-game winning streak that gave them a piece of the Big Ten title. They ended up sharing it by closing the regular season with two straight losses.

Izzo and his players overcame the loss of standout Dawson at the Big Ten tournament in wins over Ohio State, Wisconsin and Iowa and with two victories in the NCAA tournament.

"We had a special year," Thornton said. " We know we did some things at Michigan State that haven't been done in a long time

"Our ultimate goal was to make it to New Orleans to the Final Four. We weren't able to accomplish that."

Izzo said no one played well, or coached well, in the finale.

"We grew together, we won together, we had fun together, we cried together," he said. "You couldn't even look at one guy or blame one guy; collectively we just didn't get it done."

Helpful Parenting Ideas for Raising Your Baby | Article Directory ...

It?s true that there are various situations in the lives of parenting fathers. A few fathers haven?t ever married and are single, some may be divorced, others gay or widowed and there are undoubtedly more. Regardless, they are still fathers and they most definitely have a great opportunity which they can take. Along with this comes some challenges that are linked to their situation or status. You can find excellent resources that will help you to deal with the many special challenges along the way. Single fathers face unique social, practical and emotional hurdles, but you have every reason to feel confident in your ability to do so successfully.

A lot of research has been done on how to best raise and care for babies. Such studies have been performed on all sorts of issues such as sleeping habits. Some evidence supports the idea that sleeping with parents causes babies to sleep more soundly. In addition to falling asleep at a faster pace these babies don?t wake as often during the night.

Also, when parents sleep with their baby, it is much easier to respond if there should be a reason. Just remember that there are some downsides that should be thought about as well. Perhaps the best approach is to learn more, speak with professionals and see how you feel about it. There?s a lot of preparation that must go into airline travel these days. It?s possible to hold infants younger than two in your lap during the flight or you may purchase a seat for your child. This is one benefit that could be eliminated in the not so distant future. Regardless of whether you buy an extra seat or not, there is a change you could end up with your baby in your lap for the entire flight. You can elect to use the blankets that the airline attendants hand out. However, we never liked to do that simply because it was our baby, and we did not want to use a blanket that others used, etc. So be sure to take a few extra blankets with you to put on your lap.

Use the actions and reactions of baby when you have dinner at home to decide whether or not it?s a good time to take baby out for dinner. Most kids are consistent in their mealtime behavior wherever meal time happens to be.

It might be just like a night at home for you. It?s little things like this that can truly help you make a decision about your dinner plans. Fussy babies at home for dinner are very often fussy babies when out for dinner as well. We will suggest you attend a dinner outing at your normal eating times and not later in the evening. If you disrupt the routine your baby loves it can have a hugely negative impact on everyone?s meal enjoyment. Similar to mothers, fathers are a special and very important element of any family. A father has his own invaluable contributions to the positive development of healthy and well-adjusted children. Yes indeed, one or both of you will probably be working full-time and come home tired in the evenings. Allocate some time in your busy life to give it your best shot and contribute everything you are capable of contributing.

Bioethicists contribute to consensus opinion on the responsibility of biobanks

Bioethicists at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics are co-authors on a consensus article placing "significant responsibility" on biobanks to report individual research results (IRRs) and incidental findings (IFs) to the contributors of genetic material.

"The biobank should set the rules for the overall process of recognizing (and subsequently analyzing and returning) IFs and IRRs," the authors write in Genetics in Medicine.

Biobanks should define and manage a system by which "findings that are analytically valid, reveal an established and substantial risk of a serious health condition, and are clinically actionable should generally be offered to consenting contributors," the authors write.

Jeffery Kahn, Ph.D., M.P.H, was co-investigator on the study and is Deputy Director for Policy and Administration at the Berman Institute. Co-author Joan Scott, MS, CGC, is a faculty member at the Berman Institute and Executive Director of the National Coalition for Health Professional Education in Genetics. Kahn and Scott were joined by 24 colleagues on the consensus report of a two-year study funded by the National Institutes of Health.

"This discussion of the ethical duty to research patients is extremely important and a preview of the questions we will face as genomic technologies such as whole genome sequencing move from the research setting to clinical care, and patients and providers are faced with an increasing amount of genomic information," Scott says.

Analysis: GOP race awaits winner, energy, fervor

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney's methodical accumulation of Republican delegates is no thing of beauty, and the public is reacting in kind. The 2012 presidential race thus far is drawing rather tepid interest despite high stakes that include pivotal decisions about the weak economy and the fate of President Barack Obama's massive health care overhaul.

Generally speaking, voter turnout, political fundraising and public curiosity are down compared with four years ago, when John McCain pulled away from Romney and others to secure the GOP nomination.

Among Democrats, there's no primary drama after a 2008 thriller that saw Obama battle Hillary Rodham Clinton through the winter, spring and summer. But even with the power of incumbency and fierce resistance from congressional Republicans, Obama isn't raising the kind of money he did in early 2008, when his nomination and election were far from certain.

The uninspiring nature of this year's presidential race stands in contrast to the political fireworks of Congress and several industrial states. The tea party's rapid rise has turned the House into a cauldron of partisan ferment, with repeated showdowns over issues such as paying the government's debts. GOP governors in Wisconsin and Ohio are confronting public rebukes after they aggressively challenged public-sector unions.

It's entirely possible that the presidential campaign will catch fire once a Republican nominee emerges and taps into widespread unease about Obama's handling of the economy. After comfortably winning the Illinois primary Tuesday, Romney increasingly looks like that candidate.

But the former Massachusetts governor has yet to shut down Rick Santorum and two other contenders who vow to fight to the late August GOP convention in Tampa, Fla. The result is a sense of lull between the upcoming general election and the not-so-distant departure of colorful characters such as Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry and Herman Cain.

"Folks are frustrated over the inability of the race to develop into a contrast with the president and his policies rather than the trench warfare that has the GOP primary bogged down," said GOP strategist Brian Nick. "There is a frustration that it's time to move on to the next phase."

Polling by the Pew Research Center found that "overall public interest is comparable to most previous primary election cycles, but well below the high mark set four years ago."

In a recent Pew survey of adults, 23 percent said they "did not follow news about the candidates at all closely last week, a number higher than similar points in previous campaigns going back to 1992."

Overall voter turnout for GOP primaries and caucuses is lower than it was in 2008 at this date. This year's Republican turnout has seen ebbs and flows. The early voting states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina had fairly robust turnout. Comparatively low totals followed in Florida, Nevada, Colorado and Arizona, but stronger levels returned in Michigan and Ohio.

A March 2008 New York Times-CBS News poll found 41 percent of adults were "more enthusiastic" about that year's election than those in the past. A Times-CBS poll this month found only 29 percent "more enthusiastic" about the current contest.

Possible explanations abound. Romney struggles to connect with average Americans. He nonchalantly notes his friendships with owners of NASCAR and pro football teams, but he shows little interest in the sports themselves. He didn't fill out at a "March Madness" college basketball tournament bracket ? a tradition for millions of Americans, including Obama, who unveiled his choices on national TV.

Romney has tried to focus on the economy and his claim to be an experienced job creator. But Santorum and Newt Gingrich refuse to concede, forcing Romney repeatedly to argue that he's the inevitable nominee.

It's hardly a call to arms, as Santorum is happy to note.

"It's pretty sad when all you have is to do math instead of trying to go out there and win it on substance and win it on what Americans want to hear about," Santorum said while campaigning recently in Puerto Rico.

Santorum has an edgier message, extoling social and religious conservatism. But he remains underfunded, and keeps losing ground. It leaves GOP activists waiting for a nominee in a contest that, for now at least, features little suspense, excitement or fun.

"There's not a lot of enthusiasm for the current candidates, given how much Republicans want to replace this president," said John Ullyot, a Republican strategist and former Senate aide. "A lot of mainstream Republicans are sitting this race out or hoping that there will be a deadlocked convention that will result in an 'out of the box' nominee." Possible alternatives, he said, include Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Meanwhile, the Obama camp's fires aren't burning too fiercely either. His campaign said it raised about $45 million last month, below the nearly $57 million it raised in February 2008. Obama's January fundraising total also lagged behind that of January 2008.

Obama adviser David Axelrod says he worries about complacency among Democrats.

"People get seduced because they watch the spectacle on the other side and they say, 'How can anybody on that side win?'" Axelrod told MSNBC. "The truth is we need to prepare for a close contest."

Close it might be. Inspiring, exciting and uplifting are different matters.

Gas prices rising: Why GOP won't address real cause

Gas prices are rising not because of increased demand but because Wall Street is betting on higher gas prices.

Gas prices continue to rise, which is finally giving Republicans an issue. Mitt Romney is demanding the President open up more domestic drilling; the super PAC behind Rick Santorum just released a new ad in Louisiana blasting the President on gas prices; and the GOP is attacking the White House on the Keystone XL Pipeline.???

Skip to next paragraph Robert Reich

Robert is chancellor's professor of public policy at the University of California at Berkeley. He has served in three national administrations, most recently as secretary of labor under President Clinton. He has written 13 books, including 'The Work of Nations,' 'Locked in the Cabinet,' and his most recent book, 'Aftershock: The Next Economy and America's Future.' His 'Marketplace' commentaries can be found on publicradio.com and iTunes.

Recent posts

But the rise in gas prices has almost nothing to do with energy policy. It has everything to do with America?s continuing failure to adequately regulate Wall Street. But don?t hold your breath waiting for Republicans to tell the truth.

As I?ve noted before, oil supplies aren?t being squeezed. Over 80 percent of America?s energy needs are now being satisfied by domestic supplies. In fact, we?re starting to become an energy exporter. Demand for oil isn?t rising in any event. Demand is down in the U.S. compared to last year at this time, and global demand is still moderate given the economic slowdowns in Europe and China.?

But Wall Street is?betting?on higher oil prices in the future ? and that betting is causing prices to rise. The Street is laying odds that unrest in Syria will spill over into other countries or that tensions with Iran will affect the Persian Gulf, and that global demand will pick up as American consumers bounce back to life.

These bets are pushing up oil prices because Wall Street firms and other big financial players now dominate oil trading.

Financial speculators historically accounted for about 30 percent of oil contracts, producers and end users for about 70 percent. But today speculators account for 64 percent of all contracts.

Bart Chilton, a commissioner at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission ? the federal agency that regulates trading in oil futures, among other commodities ? warns that too few financial players control too much of the oil market. This allows them to push oil prices higher and higher ? not only on the basis of their expectations about the future but also expectations about how high other speculators will drive the price.

In other words, a relatively few players with very deep pockets are placing huge bets on oil ? and you?re paying.

Chilton estimates that drivers of small cars like Honda Civics are paying an extra $7.30 every time they fill up ? and that money is going into the pockets of Wall Street speculators. Drivers of larger vehicles like the Ford Explorer are paying speculators $10.41 when they fill up.

Funny, but I don?t hear Republicans rail against Wall Street speculators. Could this have anything to do with the fact that hedge funds and money managers are bankrolling the GOP as never before?

Wall Street isn?t bankrolling Democrats nearly as much this time around because the Street is still smarting from the Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform law pushed by the Democrats, and from the president?s offhand remark in 2010 calling the denizens of the Street ?fat cats.?

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is trying to limit how much speculators can bet in oil futures ? a power it was given by Dodd-Frank. It issued a rule in October, but it won?t take effect for another year.

Meanwhile, Wall Street has gone to court to stop the rule. It?s already won a stay.
