Tornado recovery effort continues in Hampton

HAMPTON ??

Two days after a tornado slammed into downtown Hampton, the cleanup efforts continued. Neighbors assisted each other in clearing debris and began tallying damage to their homes. The EF1 tornado, which produced winds up to 98 miles per hour Friday evening, caused more than $4.3 million in property damage according to Hampton.

Robin McCormick, a spokeswoman for the city, said contractors and city crews spent much of the day helping with the cleanup effort near Merrimac Shores, which was pummeled by the twister. "It's been extremely busy. Verizon and Cox have been coming in," McCormick said. "The streets are passable, but are generally down to one lane because of the trucks and debris."

McCormick said the Blackbeard Festival in downtown was able to continue as planned. Many of the festivals vendors had tents and tables overturned when the tornado struck Friday night. McCormick said the city will assess on Monday what needs to be done to clear remaining debris from the streets. Power had been restored to most residents.

More than 5,700 Dominion Virginia Power customers lost electricity when the storm hit. City officials said 206 homes were damaged by the storm as well as three businesses.

"We're slowly but surely cleaning the stuff up," said Jim Puffenberger, who lives in the Boxwood Point neighborhood. Puffenberger said on Sunday he spent much of the day clearing branches and limbs that had fallen into the creek near his home.

Neighbors spent much of the weekend swapping stories of where they were when the tornado struck. Hampton police said no one was hurt or seriously injured by the storm. "It was by the grace of God," said Holly Morando, who rode out the tornado underneath a table along with her two daughters, Violet and Sofia, at their Merrimac Shores home. Her husband, Paul, was nearby at the grocery store when the storm hit.

"I was in the checkout line and then everyone had to go to the back of the store. People were scared," Paul Morando said. The Morandos' home didn't sustain major damage, but their yard was covered in tree branches and limbs. Many of their neighbors had trees on their cars or homes.

Art Butler, 61, who lives off Worden Avenue, said police had responded to his home Friday night out of concern he may have been trapped. He was down the street at a friend's home. Several trees fell in his yard but missed his boat and his house. Butler also said he was grateful no one was hurt.

"I'm just happy this is all it is and it's over," Butler said.

Shape-shifting shell

Monday, June 4, 2012

Scientists at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, have for the first time uncovered the detailed structure of the shell that surrounds the genetic material of retroviruses, such as HIV, at a crucial and potentially vulnerable stage in their life cycle: when they are still being formed. The study, published online today in Nature, provides information on a part of the virus that may be a potential future drug target.

Retroviruses essentially consist of genetic material encased in a protein shell, which is in turn surrounded by a membrane. After entering a target cell ? in the case of HIV, one of the cells in our immune system ? the virus replicates, producing more copies of itself, each of which has to be assembled from a medley of viral and cellular components into an immature virus. "All the necessary components are brought together within the host cell to form the immature virus, which then has to mature into a particle that's able to infect other cells" says John Briggs, who led the research at EMBL. "We found that when it does, the changes to the virus' shell are more dramatic than expected."

Both the mature and immature virus shells are honeycomb-like lattices of hexagon-shaped units. Using a combination of electron microscopy and computer-based methods, Briggs and colleagues investigated which parts of the key proteins stick together to build the honeycomb of the immature shell. These turned out to be very different from the parts that build the mature shell. This knowledge will help scientists to unravel how the immature virus is assembled in the cell and how the shell proteins rearrange themselves to go from one form to the other.

Findings such as these may one day prove valuable to those wanting to design new types of anti-retroviral therapies. Many anti-retroviral drugs already block the enzyme that would normally separate components of the immature shell to allow it to mature. But there are currently no approved drugs that act on that shell itself and prevent the enzyme from locking on.

Although the virus shells imaged in this study were derived from the Mason-Pfizer monkey virus and made artificially in the laboratory, they closely resemble those of both this virus and HIV ? which are very similar ? in their natural forms.

"We still need a lot more detailed information before drug design can really be contemplated," Briggs concludes, "but finally being able to compare mature and immature structures is a step forwards."

Color of Breast Cancer: Why Blacks and Whites are Different

One of the many mysteries surrounding breast cancer is why black women and white women have different experiences with the disease. A possible explanation for why blacks and whites are different has been discovered by experts at the North Shore-LIJ Health System and the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and being presented at the 2012 American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting.

In the United States, there are significant differences in the rates of new cases of and deaths from breast cancer among women. The highest number of new cases of breast cancer occur among white women, at 123.5 per 100,000, compared with 113.0 per 100,000 among black women.

But when you look at death rates from breast cancer, black women fare far worse than white women: per 100,000 women there are 33.0 deaths among blacks and 23.9 among whites. In addition, the five-year survival rates are 90% for white women and 78% for black women, which is the lowest of any other ethnic and racial group in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society.

Among women younger than 40, blacks have a higher incidence of breast cancer than whites, and they are more likely to be diagnosed with larger tumors than white women. Black women also experience a more aggressive form of breast cancer that appears nearly 10 years before those seen in white women.

The discovery made by the researchers and physicians in this new study focused on a genetic marker called microRNA, which is found in the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). It's known that the expression of microRNA is not the same between black and white women, and the investigators wanted to find out why this is so and if the variation might explain the difference in survival between white and black women who have breast cancer.

The investigators collected blood samples from 32 women, 16 white and 16 black. Ten women had stage III triple-negative breast cancer (5 black, 5 white), 10 had stage III estrogen-receptor or progesterone-receptor positive breast cancer (5 black, 5 white), and 12 women served as controls (6 black, 6 white). All the samples were analyzed for microRNA profiles.

Analysis of the blood samples revealed the following:

  • White patients with triple-negative breast cancer overexpressed 20 microRNAs, which was 15 times greater than seen in controls
  • None of the microRNAs seen in the women with triple-negative breast cancer were seen in the black patients
  • Black women with breast cancer overexpressed only six microRNAs (15 times greater than seen in controls), and none of these microRNAs were found in the white patients who had triple-negative breast cancer
  • Four microRNAs seen in black patients and 8 microRNAs seen in white patients were not previously reported in association with breast cancer. This finding indicates that these microRNAs may have a role in how women react to cancer.

What the study findings suggest
What do the differences in the microRNA expressions between black breast cancer patients and white breast cancer patients mean? For one thing, they "may provide insight into answering why, when receiving similar treatments, outcomes are different between African Americans and Caucasians," noted Iuliana Shapira, MD, director of the Cancer Genetics Program at the North Shore-LIJ Health System's Monter Cancer Center.

The study's findings also indicate that women with breast cancer who have the worst outcomes may have microRNAs that promote cancer, and that white women may have microRNAs that protect them against cancer while black women do not express those microRNAs.

"Methods to increase microRNAs in the blood before surgery for cancer, such as giving chemotherapy before surgery for cancer, may improve survival rates in African American women with triple-negative breast cancer," offered Shapira. Overall, the study casts new light on the color of breast cancer and offers researchers new information regarding differences between how white women and black women experience the disease.

The Wait is Over ? 21st Century Personal Finance Tools Have Finally

The Wait is Over ? 21st Century Personal Finance Tools Have Finally Arrived!

Rochester, NY (PRWEB) May 31, 2012

With tens of millions of Americans struggling with consumer debt burdens and millions trying to save their homes from foreclosure, it is shocking that 19th Century personal finance tools remain the primary option for distressed households. Indeed, the lack of precise and realistic money management tools characterizes the personal finance education industry that is dominated by private banks, credit unions, higher education, nonprofit foundations, personal finance gurus, and especially federal and state government agencies. Even the President?s Advisory Council on Financial Capability has ignored its leadership responsibility to develop and promote more accurate and innovative approaches to personal finance in general and household budgeting in particular. Americans need and deserve so much more during this period of economic uncertainty.

The key question is why are financial institutions and even public agencies continuing to use antiquated personal finance software/methods and related budgeting/money management curricula rather than more practical approaches that address the complexity of contemporary household finances? In particular, why are American households encouraged to use gross income assessment tools when their economic reality is that household expenses must be paid from net income? Is there a reason that these personal finance tools provide the illusion of greater financial control and yet lead the average American to higher levels of consumption and ultimately consumer debt?

With this ongoing leadership crisis in the personal finance education industry, the DebtorWise Foundation is pleased to announce the release of its pathbreaking, net cash-flow budgeting/ personal finance Credit Counseling course that is based on the IRS 1040 federal tax guidelines. Rather than a ?one size fits all? approach to personal finance with its inherent imprecision, the DebtorWise Foundation?s money management software/curriculum enable consumers to: (a) specify the unique economic characteristics of their household, (b) calculate their monthly net income, and (c) customize a household budget based on the financial constraints of their net cash-flow. The key features include household size/structure, tax filing status, and state and local income tax liabilities. Furthermore, the DWF budgeting software is accompanied with a state-of-the art document management/data verification system.

According to Dr. Anita Butera, Esq, Director of Bankruptcy Education, ?it is striking that Americans are berated over their lack of personal finance skills. Yet, the so-called experts promote personal finance tools that are more appropriate for the age of the horse and buggy than the Ipad generation. At DebtorWise, we have harnessed the scholarly vision and academic precision of our founder?Dr. Robert D. Manning ?to better serve those Americans that desperately need our practical guidance and innovative budgeting software/courses/assistance.?

As Dr. Butera explains, ?Imagine trying to develop a budget based on gross income that ignores state and local taxes, itemized tax deductions, and even homeowner status. You can easily overestimate available household income to pay monthly expenses by 20% ? 25%. And, try evaluating whether a mortgage modification is affordable when you don?t know the net cost of lower loan (tax deductible) interest rates. No wonder so many hard working families are confused over balancing their budget ?with gross income?when they realize that they don?t have enough money to pay their bills at the end of the month! Is it surprising that so many people give up on their personal finances?? With the goal of bridging this informational deficiency, the DebtorWise Foundation is offering the first net cash-flow budgeting curriculum that is based on the IRS 1040 federal tax guidelines.

The DebtorWise Foundation is the nation?s leading innovator in online financial education courses and personal finance software. Founded by Dr. Manning, an internationally recognized consumer finance scholar, the DebtorWise Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing affordable financial education to financially distressed and low-income households. It provides the pre-filing Credit Counseling and pre-discharge Debtor Education courses that are required by the Federal Court for filing consumer bankruptcy. Dr. Manning?s most recent monograph examines Walmart?s expansion into consumer financial services in the United States with a case-study of Banco Walmart de Mexico.
