You can buy 'Hunger Games' District 12

Margo Metzger / AP

The abandoned Henry River Mill Village in Hildebran, N.C., where scenes from "The Hunger Games" were shot. The house on the left was outfitted as the Everdeens' home in the Seam, part of District 12 in fictional Panem.

By Courtney Garcia, msnbc.com contributor

Panem's District 12, the bleak mining district where Katniss Everdeen lived in "The Hunger Games," didn't exactly look like a cozy place to make your home. But if you're a true fan, with a Capitol-sized bank account, you can do just that.

What once was a mill town's company store stood in for Peeta's family bakery.

Wade Shepherd, 83, is selling 72 acres of property in Hildebran, N.C., and his land stood in for Katniss' home district in the blockbuster film. But Katniss herself could never afford it. The price tag is a cool $1.4 million.

The land Shepherd is selling is the Henry River Mill Village, once a bustling mill area that emptied?after its factory burned in 1977. Since the mill was destroyed, only?about 20 buildings remain, including the company store, which stood in for Peeta's family bakery.

Since the movie?s March 21 release, fans have stalked the property to get a glimpse of what was home for the film?s primary characters, Katniss, Peeta and Gale.

Shepherd told the Associated Press, "I'm getting too many visitors?Day and night, they're driving through, taking pictures, getting out and walking. I'm just bombarded with people."

Shepherd told AP he didn?t think he could make enough money to make?the area?worth opening as a tourist attraction, so he will sell off his property instead.

Lionsgate

The?rest of the area has moved quickly?to profit on the burgeoning tourist industry that came with ?The Hunger Games.? Lionsgate Films?reportedly invested over $60 million to shoot in North Carolina, and since filming wrapped, VisitNC.com?has put together a four-day tour leading fans to District 12.

Travelers can even order eggs, Josh Hutcherson-style, at the Early Girl Eatery, where the actor?was interviewed by?Entertainment Weekly. (The restaurant isn't revealing the preparation technique, but reportedly will make the eggs as Hutcherson had them for those who ask.)

Another company known as ?Hunger Games Fan Tours??enlists actors to re-enact scenes and engage participants in archery, camouflage, and fire-building. The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, according to Leigh Trapp, co-creator of the project.

?What we really found was that kids loved it, and so did the adults,? Trapp told the Asheville Citizen-Times. ?The adults really became kids again. It?s like going to summer camp. You form intimate bonds with people who are like-minded and want to participate.?

Think people would go to a "Hunger Games" tourist attraction if it was turned into something like that? Tell us on Facebook.

Dangerous blood pressure medicine

Dangerous blood pressure medicine [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 5-Apr-2012

Contact: Dr. Ingrid Schubert
Ingrid.Schubert@uk-koeln.de
Deutsches Aerzteblatt International

Despite the fact that nifedipine increases the risk of heart attacks and death, doctors still prescribe this immediate-release blood pressure drug to elderly patients. The Cologne-based research group led by Ingrid Schubert has now published the results of their investigation in the current issue of Deutsches rzteblatt International (Dtsch Arztebl Int 2012; 109[12]: 215-9).

Immediate-release nifedipine is classified as a potentially dangerous drug in the PRISCUS list published in 2010. Earlier studies demonstrated that, in comparison to other antihypertensive drugs, nifedipine increases patient risk for mortality and heart attacks. Ingrid Schubert and colleagues have now examined how frequently this calcium channel blocker is prescribed under everyday conditions. By analyzing data from 260 672 insured patients, they were able to document for the first time that doctors continue to prescribe immediate-release nifedipine to elderly patients. Thus, in 2009, about 1% of the group of elderly patients, who are especially vulnerable to adverse drug reactions, received nifedipine and were therefore exposed to higher risks.

NY Times Magazine Article On Gaming Has A Video Game ...

Well this is new. And sort of neat, mainly because you can actually shoot comments.

The New York Times Magazine?s cover piece this week is about the addictive nature of ?stupid games,? and for the online version, Jon Huang, a multimedia producer at the Times, modified a simple game to allow users to shoot apart the page.

It?s gimmicky, but dammit, it?s fun. We just spent 10 minutes shooting up the ?Most Emailed? section. Poor Maureen Dowd, her avatar was the first to feel our wrath.

Additionally, the cover story the game is embedded in is an engrossing read that delves into the history of casual games ? or as writer Sam Anderson puts it in the 5000 word piece, ?stupid games? ? the gist of which is this: games, chess and Monopoly for example, used to be an event, something that was planned and required large chunks of time and some mental effort. Modern games are merely a distraction that even the lowest common intellectual denominator can play. Something to do while riding the train or waiting in the doctor?s office, etc.

Writes Anderson:

In the nearly 30 years since Tetris?s invention ? and especially over the last five, with the rise of smartphones ? Tetris and its offspring (Angry Birds, Bejeweled, Fruit Ninja, etc.) have colonized our pockets and our brains and shifted the entire economic model of the video-game industry. Today we are living, for better and worse, in a world of stupid games.

Game-studies scholars (there are such things) like to point out that games tend to reflect the societies in which they are created and played. Monopoly, for instance, makes perfect sense as a product of the 1930s ? it allowed anyone, in the middle of the Depression, to play at being a tycoon. Risk, released in the 1950s, is a stunningly literal expression of cold-war realpolitik. Twister is the translation, onto a game board, of the mid-1960s sexual revolution. One critic called it ?sex in a box.?

Tetris was invented exactly when and where you would expect ? in a Soviet computer lab in 1984 ? and its game play reflects this origin. The enemy in Tetris is not some identifiable villain (Donkey Kong, Mike Tyson, Carmen Sandiego) but a faceless, ceaseless, reasonless force that threatens constantly to overwhelm you, a churning production of blocks against which your only defense is a repetitive, meaningless sorting. It is bureaucracy in pure form, busywork with no aim or end, impossible to avoid or escape. And the game?s final insult is that it annihilates free will. Despite its obvious futility, somehow we can?t make ourselves stop rotating blocks. Tetris, like all the stupid games it spawned, forces us to choose to punish ourselves.

In 2009, 25 years after the invention of Tetris, a nearly bankrupt Finnish company called Rovio hit upon a similarly perfect fusion of game and device: Angry Birds. The game involves launching peevish birds at green pigs hiding inside flimsy structures. Its basic mechanism ? using your index finger to pull back a slingshot, over and over and over and over and over and over and over ? was the perfect use of the new technology of the touch screen: simple enough to lure a suddenly immense new market of casual gamers, satisfying enough to hook them.

Within months, Angry Birds became the most popular game on the iPhone, then spread across every other available platform. Today it has been downloaded, in its various forms, more than 700 million times. It has also inspired a disturbingly robust merchandising empire: films, T-shirts, novelty slippers, even plans for Angry Birds ?activity parks? featuring play equipment for kids. For months, a sign outside my local auto-repair shop promised, ?Free Angry Birds pen with service.? The game?s latest iteration, Angry Birds Space, appeared a couple weeks ago with a promotional push from Wal-Mart, T-Mobile, National Geographic Books, MTV and NASA. (There was an announcement on the International Space Station.) Angry Birds, it seems, is our Tetris: the string of digital prayer beads that our entire culture can twiddle in moments of rapture or anxiety ? economic, political or existential.

Seriously, when you have time, go read the whole thing. It?s quite interesting.

Costa Rica Deficit Plans Face Delay After Finance Minister Quits ...

The resignation of Costa Rica?s Finance Minister Fernando Herrero may delay a congressional vote on tax changes aimed at paring a $2 billion fiscal deficit, said Boris Segura, strategist at Nomura Securities in New York.

Herrero submitted his resignation to President Laura Chinchilla yesterday following allegations by the La Nacion newspaper that he underpaid taxes for 12 years. In a statement last week, he denied deliberately evading taxes.

?The main issue is if his resignation is going to impede the tax reform approval,? said Segura in a phone interview from Costa Rica. ?It will likely cause some further delays.?

Drafted last year by Herrero and Chinchilla?s government, the tax package would add about $650 million a year to government revenue to narrow a deficit currently valued at more than 5 percent of gross domestic product, according to the Finance Ministry. Changes include replacing the 13 percent sales tax with a 14 percent value-added tax and imposing a 15 percent tax on dividends paid by companies that enter the country?s free-trade zones after 2015.

Herrero said in a statement that he resigned to protect Chinchilla?s government and so that ?my name won?t be used as an obstacle to the great transformations we dreamed of.?

The abuse of drugs and alcohol is common ... - Fitness For Health

The use of alcohol and drugs is common among American teens and more than 15 percent meet the criteria for substance abuse, a new study finds.

?Once again we are reminded that in most cases experimentation with alcohol and drug use begins in adolescence,? said Bruce Goldman, director of Substance Abuse Services Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks, New York.

?Unfortunately, many young people are at risk for abuse and dependence problems due to factors including a genetic predisposition, environmental availability, difficulties in school, social or family problems and concurrent psychiatric or behavioral,? said Goldman, who did not participated in the study.

In the study, Joel Swendsen, University of Bordeaux in France, and colleagues analyzed data from a U.S. survey. States With more than 10,000 adolescents aged 13 to 18 years of age. They found that over 78 percent of older teens had consumed alcohol, about 47 percent had used at least twelve drinks a year, and about 15 percent met criteria for alcohol abuse.

The study also found that 81.4 percent of adolescents reported greater opportunity to use illicit drugs, 42.5 percent used drugs, and 16.4 percent abused drugs.

The average age when teenagers began using substances was 14 years for regular use or abuse of alcohol with or without dependence, 14 years for drug abuse dependence, and 15 years for drug abuse without dependence.

?Since the early-onset substance use is a significant predictor of behavior and substance use disorders throughout life, the public health implications of the current findings are comprehensive,? they wrote in the edition of April issue of Archives of General Psychiatry.

It must do more to ensure that young people do not start early on the road to substance abuse, Goldman emphasized.

?It is imperative that families, schools, police, youth groups and communities together to prevent or delay the onset of substance use as much as possible,? he asked. ?Social norms have a powerful impact on patterns of drug use. We must create rules that the use and availability of substances, particularly among young people is not acceptable.?

This means giving young people the resources to fight, said Goldman. ?The effective early intervention should be universally available to young people who use substances,? he said.
